How to Memorize Persian Verbs: 7 Practical Systems for Farsi Beginners

Persian verbs are easier to memorise when you stop treating them as isolated words. A useful verb card should include four things: the infinitive, the past stem, the present stem, and one real sentence. This way, you learn meaning, grammar, and usage together.

This guide is about how to remember Persian verbs. If you want the full grammar rules for changing verbs by tense and person, use the companion guide on Persian verb conjugation. If you want a large verb list, use essential Persian verbs.

Important SEO note: Danaa currently has two similar pages about memorising Persian verbs. The stronger canonical version should be /memorize-persian-verbs-for-beginners/. If this rebuilt content stays on /how-to-memorize-persian-verbs-easily/, redirect or canonicalise the other page to avoid cannibalization.

The Best Verb Card Format

Do not memorise only “raftan = to go”. That is not enough. Learn every verb in a four-part card:

ElementExampleWhy It Matters
InfinitiveرفتنThe dictionary form: to go.
Past stemرفتUsed for past tense: رفتم = I went.
Present stemروUsed for present tense and commands: می‌روم, برو.
Sentenceمن به خانه می‌روم.Context makes the verb easier to remember.
7 Systems for Memorising Persian Verbs
1
Learn verbs by function, not alphabetically
Group verbs by what they help you do: movement, communication, daily life, emotion, thinking, and social interaction. Functional groups are easier to recall in conversation.
2
Memorise present and past stems together
Many Persian learners know the infinitive but cannot build sentences because they do not know the present stem. Always learn both stems from day one.
دیدن → دید / بینdidan → did / binto see → past stem / present stem
3
Start with 20 high-frequency verbs
A small set of core verbs lets you build many useful sentences. Do not start with rare or literary verbs.
4
Use mini-sentences instead of isolated repetition
Say and write short sentences using each verb. For example, instead of repeating “khordan, khordan, khordan”, practise: من غذا می‌خورم — I eat food.
5
Treat compound verbs as chunks
Persian uses many compound verbs built from a noun/adjective + helper verb, especially کردن, شدن, دادن, داشتن, and زدن.
کمک کردن، شروع کردن، تمام شدنkomak kardan, shoru kardan, tamām shodanto help, to start, to finish
6
Compare formal and spoken forms
Learners often memorise formal forms but hear spoken forms in real life. Connect them early: می‌روم → میرم, می‌خواهم → می‌خوام, می‌شود → میشه.
7
Review by retrieval, not rereading
Cover the Persian and try to produce it from English. Then cover the English and explain the Persian. Retrieval builds memory much better than simply rereading your notes.

What is the easiest way to memorise Persian verbs?

The easiest way is to learn each verb with its infinitive, past stem, present stem, and one example sentence. This helps you remember both meaning and grammar.

Which Persian verbs should beginners learn first?

Beginners should start with high-frequency verbs such as بودن, داشتن, رفتن, آمدن, کردن, گفتن, دیدن, دانستن, خواستن, and خوردن. These verbs appear constantly in everyday Persian.

Why are Persian present stems hard to remember?

Present stems are often irregular and cannot always be guessed from the infinitive. That is why learners should memorise the present stem together with the past stem from the beginning.
