Personality in Farsi: 70+ Character Adjectives to Describe People in Persian

Describing someone’s personality in Persian goes beyond translating adjectives. Character vocabulary in Farsi carries cultural weight — certain traits are spoken of with specific Persian words that have no direct English equivalent, and the way Iranians describe people reflects deep cultural values around hospitality, generosity, honour, and social harmony.

Note on register: Persian personality vocabulary often has both a formal/written version and a colloquial spoken version. This guide shows both where they differ — marked as (formal) and (colloquial). Persian cultural note on personality: In Iranian culture, the most universally praised character trait is mardānegi (مردانگی) — roughly “nobility of character” or “manly virtue” — which encompasses generosity, loyalty, keeping one’s word, and protecting those who depend on you. Calling someone mārdā (مردا — a true man/person of character) is one of the highest compliments in Persian. This concept transcends gender in modern usage and applies to anyone who demonstrates noble character.
