Days of the Week in Farsi (Rooz-haye Hafteh)

Unlike the Western week which starts on Monday or Sunday, the Persian week starts on Saturday. Here is how to say the days:

  • Saturday: Shanbeh (شنبه) - Start of the work week
  • Sunday: Yek-shanbeh (یک‌شنبه)
  • Monday: Do-shanbeh (دوشنبه)
  • Tuesday: Se-shanbeh (سه‌شنبه)
  • Wednesday: Chahar-shanbeh (چهارشنبه)
  • Thursday: Panj-shanbeh (پنج‌شنبه) - Weekend starts after noon
  • Friday: Jomeh (جمعه) - Holiday/Rest day

Important Persian Holidays & Dates

When planning a trip to Iran, keep these fixed dates in the Solar Hijri calendar in mind:

  • Nowruz (New Year): 1st of Farvardin (Starts exactly on the Spring Equinox, usually March 20/21).
  • Sizdah Bedar (Nature Day): 13th of Farvardin (April 1st or 2nd).
  • Shab-e Yalda (Longest Night): Last night of Azar (December 21st).
  • Chaharshanbe Suri (Fire Festival): The last Tuesday evening of the year (before Nowruz).

Why is the Persian Calendar Unique?

Unlike the Gregorian calendar which is purely mathematical, the Persian Calendar is astronomical. It is strictly tied to the movement of the Earth around the Sun.

  • The New Year (Nowruz): Starts exactly on the vernal equinox (the first day of Spring), usually on March 20th or 21st.

  • Accuracy: It is actually more accurate than the Western calendar, requiring fewer leap year corrections over centuries!
