English Literature or English Language?
Literature and Language are different qualifications. These AQA examples distinguish Literature A, Literature B and Language; confirm your specification, exam year and tutor coverage before booking.
English Literature A
AQA 7712Love through the ages and texts in shared contexts, with a comparative study across time.
English Literature B
AQA 7717Literary genres, texts and genres, and independent work informed by the Critical Anthology.
English Language
AQA 7702Explore how English is used, how it varies and changes, and how children develop language.
Use the AQA specification for your exam year: optional Literature texts change for first exams in 2027. Other boards have different texts, paper formats and coursework requirements.
The step up is larger than students expect
A-Level study develops more sustained arguments, wider reading and greater independence. The exact demands depend on whether you take Literature or Language and on your specification.
From analysis to argument
GCSE rewards identifying techniques and explaining their effect. A-Level requires a sustained thesis that the whole essay defends — with the text used as evidence for your reading of it.
Critical theory arrives
A-Level introduces critical perspectives — feminist, Marxist, post-colonial, psychoanalytic readings. Students must engage with alternative interpretations rather than asserting one correct meaning.
Independence is assessed
For the AQA courses above, NEA contributes 20%. Literature A, Literature B and Language each have different tasks; agree the requirements and permitted support with your school or exam centre.
NEA preparation: understand the task and permitted support
Plan early and follow your specification and centre’s instructions. Coursework must remain your own work and meet the supervision and authentication requirements.
Understand the task before choosing material
Check the required text types or language-investigation task with your centre. Literature A, Literature B and Language have different requirements.
Learn how to form a research question
Practise developing a focused question and explain the approach you intend to take. Agree any permitted support with your supervising teacher.
Develop reading and research skills
Learn to distinguish evidence, interpretation and argument, and to acknowledge sources accurately.
Referencing and independent writing
Practise general academic skills using separate exercises. Your assessed coursework must follow your centre’s rules for assistance.
Agree coursework support with your centre
Before discussing assessed NEA with a private tutor, ask your supervising teacher what assistance is allowed and how it must be recorded.
For AQA Literature A, checking a draft must not include suggestions for improving it. General study skills and separate practice exercises should be distinguished from the assessed submission.
Why choose Danaa School for A-Level English?
Discuss your chosen course and areas for improvement, then use your trial to agree a realistic study plan.
Argument-Led Teaching
We train students to open with a thesis and defend it. Examiners reward a controlled argument far above a list of well-spotted techniques.
Critical Theory Made Usable
Feminist, Marxist, and post-colonial readings taught as practical analytical tools — not abstract labels dropped into a conclusion.
Essays Marked to Spec
Practise with the assessment objectives and response formats for your own specification, and discuss areas to improve with your tutor.
Teaching Language to Suit Your Needs
Ask about your tutor’s teaching languages before booking. Include practice in the academic English used by your course.
Where A-Level English leads
Close reading and clear argument can support further study in these areas. Check subject and grade requirements with each university.
Law
Close reading, argument and precise writing are useful in legal study. Universities set their own subject and grade requirements.
Humanities & PPE
History, Politics, Philosophy, and PPE all assess the same skill English trains: building a defensible argument from contested evidence.
Journalism & Media
Writing clearly and quickly for a specific audience is the daily work of journalism, publishing, PR, and communications.
Any Essay-Based Degree
The written skills A-Level English builds carry directly into undergraduate essays, dissertations, and professional writing of every kind.
