GCSE English is actually two separate GCSEs
English Language and English Literature are separate qualifications. The AQA examples below show how their assessments differ; use the specification for your own exam board and exam year.
English Language
AQA 8700The reading texts are unseen, but reading strategies, vocabulary and writing skills can be practised. In AQA 8700, writing contributes half of the written-exam marks.
English Literature
AQA 8702AQA Literature exams are closed book. Extracts and some poems are printed in the papers, while knowledge of the wider texts supports your answers.
Support for bilingual students and developing academic English
Everyday fluency and exam writing involve different skills. Identify whether you need help with vocabulary, analytical expression or accuracy, then discuss a suitable plan with your tutor.
📖 Idiom and cultural reference
Unseen texts may include idioms, allusions and references that need careful reading. Practise explaining what a phrase suggests rather than translating each word in isolation.
✍️ Technical accuracy is 20% of Language
In AQA 8700, each writing task awards 16 of its 40 marks for technical accuracy. Practise the spelling, punctuation, grammar and sentence choices that your own writing needs.
🎭 Shakespeare and 19th-century English
Early Modern English and Victorian prose are difficult for every student. For a bilingual student they can feel like a third language. Our tutors build genuine comprehension first, then layer the analytical technique on top of real understanding.
Teaching language and the support you need
Discuss the tutor’s teaching languages before booking. Lessons should include practice in the academic English required by your course.
English Literature is a closed-book exam
AQA English Literature is closed book, but the exam includes extracts and some printed poems. Practise selecting relevant quotations, using the material provided and connecting it with your knowledge of the wider text.
Quotation banks
We build a focused set of short, flexible quotations per text — chosen because they can be used across multiple possible questions, not memorised at random.
Analysis, not retelling
Examiners reward students who explain how a writer creates meaning. Retelling the plot earns almost nothing. We train this distinction explicitly.
Context that earns marks
Context is assessed, but only when it is woven into the argument. We teach students to use it as evidence, never as a bolted-on paragraph.
Timed essay practice
Paper 2 is 2 hours 15 minutes across three sections. Students need a planned, rehearsed timing strategy — not a first attempt on exam day.
Where Literature marks are really lost
Strong answers use relevant evidence and explain how a writer creates meaning. Practise concise quotation selection, analysis and the timing each question needs.
AQA Literature components to prepare for
Tell your tutor your specification, exam year and chosen texts so you can confirm coverage and plan relevant practice.
Shakespeare
Extract-based analysis extending to the whole play — language, character, structure, and the ideas of the period.
19th-Century Novel
Victorian prose with dense, formal language. Comprehension first, then analysis of theme, character, and social context.
Modern Text
One full essay from a choice of two, on a modern play or novel. Thematic argument and sustained analysis.
Poetry & Unseen
Anthology comparison plus two completely unseen poems. The unseen section rewards technique, not memorisation.
