The Challenge Heritage Families Face

Why Farsi Fades — And How to Stop It

Persian heritage learners are in a unique position: they grew up hearing Farsi at home, understanding it, feeling it — but school, friends, and daily life happen in English (or French, German, Dutch…). Without consistent support, children who could have been fully bilingual drift toward passive understanding at best, and full loss at worst.

!
Children respond in English

Even when parents speak Farsi, kids answer back in the dominant language — and it gradually becomes the default.

!
No formal Farsi education

Most schools outside Iran offer no Persian language classes, leaving parents to figure it out alone.

!
Reading and writing are lost first

Heritage learners often speak a little but cannot read the Farsi script — cutting them off from literature, family messages, and cultural identity.

!
Generic apps and courses don't work

Tools like Duolingo treat heritage speakers the same as complete beginners — ignoring everything they already know and the cultural context they already carry.

💡 Heritage learners don't need to start from zero — they need a tutor who understands their unique background and meets them exactly where they are. That's what we built.

What's Included

The Danaa Heritage Learner Programme

Not a generic Farsi course. A personalised journey designed specifically for children and adults who already have Persian roots and want to build on them.

🎯

Free Placement Assessment

Every heritage learner starts differently. We assess your child's spoken comprehension, reading level, writing, and cultural knowledge — then build a custom learning path from there.

📖

Farsi Reading & Script

Master the Persian alphabet, connect letters, and unlock a world of poetry, stories, and family messages. Reading opens the door everything else depends on.

🎭

Culture Through Arts

Language without culture is just vocabulary. Our tutors weave Shahnameh stories, Hafez poetry, Persian music, and Nowruz traditions into every lesson — making Farsi feel alive.

🗣️

Conversational Confidence

Heritage learners often understand more than they speak. We build the confidence to respond, express, and connect — with grandparents, cousins, and community.

👨‍👩‍👧

Parent Involvement Guide

We help parents create a "Farsi environment" at home between lessons — songs, story time routines, and simple daily habits that make the language stick faster.

🌟

Native Persian Tutors

All our tutors are native speakers with experience teaching heritage learners specifically — not just general Farsi teachers who treat every student the same.

Heritage Families, Real Results

From London to Toronto, diaspora families are reconnecting with Persian identity through Danaa School.

★★★★★

"My daughter is 9 and was embarrassed to speak Farsi at school. After six months with her Danaa tutor, she reads stories to her grandma over video call. I can't describe how that feels."

"I grew up in Toronto and my Farsi faded completely by my teens. I started lessons as an adult — within 3 months I was texting my parents in Farsi for the first time in 20 years."

"What I love about Danaa is they don't just teach words — they teach culture. My son now asks about Shahnameh heroes by name. He's proud to be Persian, and that's priceless."

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What age groups does the heritage programme cover?
We work with heritage learners from age 4 all the way through adulthood. Children as young as 5 benefit from story-based, playful Farsi sessions. Teenagers and adults follow a more structured curriculum focused on reading fluency, conversational confidence, and cultural depth. We'll recommend the right approach during your free placement assessment.
My child speaks a little Farsi at home. Does that count as a heritage learner?
Yes, absolutely. Heritage learners are anyone with Persian family or cultural background who has some exposure to the language — even if that's just hearing it at home without speaking it. Our tutors are trained to work with this exact profile: building on existing comprehension rather than starting from scratch like a complete beginner.
How is this different from a standard Farsi course or app?
Apps like Duolingo treat everyone as a complete beginner and ignore cultural context. Standard Farsi courses follow a fixed curriculum that doesn't account for what heritage learners already know. Our programme starts with a free assessment, skips what your child already understands, and builds specifically on their gaps — while weaving in poetry, stories, and cultural arts that make the language feel like home, not homework.
How often should my child have lessons?
Most heritage families start with one 45-minute or 60-minute lesson per week. For children preparing for GCSE Persian, twice a week is often recommended. Your tutor will advise on frequency after the free trial lesson based on your child's goals and current level.
What if my child is resistant to learning Farsi?
This is one of the most common concerns we hear. Our tutors are experienced at making Farsi feel relevant and engaging — through stories, games, music, and topics the child actually cares about. We don't use rote memorisation. The first trial lesson is always the best test: book one and see how your child responds.
Do you also work with adult heritage learners?
Yes. Many of our students are adults who grew up in the diaspora, lost their Farsi, and now want to reclaim it — for family connection, cultural identity, or a planned visit to Iran. Adult heritage learners often progress faster than complete beginners because of existing cultural and linguistic context. We have tutors who specialise specifically in adult heritage programmes.
