What Most Courses Miss

Spoken Farsi Is a Different Language from Written Farsi

Most textbooks and apps teach you "ketâbi" (written/formal) Farsi — the version used in books, news, and official documents. But when Iranians talk to each other at home, at work, or on the street, they use a completely different register.

At Danaa, our speaking course teaches you conversational (spoken) Farsi from the start. Your tutor is a native speaker who teaches you how Persians actually talk — with contractions, informal pronouns, colloquial expressions, and the real pronunciation that textbooks never cover.

Inside a Lesson

What a 45-Minute Speaking Class Looks Like

A typical intermediate speaking session with a Danaa tutor — focused 100% on conversation and pronunciation.

0–10 min

Free Conversation

Chat naturally about your week, news, or anything on your mind. Your tutor notes mistakes silently for later correction.

10–25 min🎯

Targeted Practice

Today's topic: ordering food. Role-play a restaurant scenario. Learn 8–10 new food-related expressions. Practise pronunciation of tricky sounds.

25–38 min🔄

Correction Round

Your tutor reviews the mistakes noted earlier. You repeat corrected sentences. Focus on one or two pronunciation patterns — not everything at once.

38–45 min📝

Wrap-up & Homework

Summary of new vocabulary. Homework: record a 1-minute voice message using today's phrases. Your tutor listens and sends feedback before next class.

Persian Sounds That English Speakers Find Tricky

Farsi has a few sounds that do not exist in English. Your tutor will help you produce these sounds correctly — not by memorising IPA charts, but by repeating words, getting instant feedback, and training your ear through conversation.

  • خ kh — a soft "ch" like Scottish "loch" (not "k")
  • غ gh — a gargled "g" from the back of the throat
  • ق q — deeper than "g", similar to Arabic qaf
  • ع 'ain — a glottal stop, unique to Semitic-origin words
  • ر r — a rolled/flapped "r", never the English "r"

FAQ

Questions About Farsi Speaking Lessons

Absolutely. Our beginner speaking course starts from the very first word — "salâm" (hello). Your tutor uses English as a bridge language in early lessons and gradually shifts toward more Farsi as you build vocabulary. Most complete beginners can hold a basic 2-minute conversation after 4–6 lessons.

Spoken (colloquial) Farsi differs from written (formal/ketâbi) Farsi in pronunciation, vocabulary, and grammar. For example, "I want to go home" is "mikham beram khune" in spoken Farsi but "mikhâham beravam khâne" in written Farsi. Most apps and textbooks teach written Farsi, which sounds unnatural in conversation. At Danaa, speaking courses focus on how Iranians actually talk.

No. Speaking lessons focus entirely on listening and talking. Your tutor uses transliteration (Farsi written in Latin letters) when showing new vocabulary. Many students take speaking-only classes for months before deciding to learn reading separately. The two skills can be learned independently or together — your choice.

This is our most common scenario — especially for heritage speakers who grew up hearing Persian at home but always replied in English (or another language). Your tutor creates a safe, patient space where you practise activating vocabulary you already know passively. Within a few weeks, most heritage speakers start producing full sentences and gain confidence rapidly.

Your tutor corrects pronunciation in real time during every conversation — not as a separate grammar exercise but naturally, within the flow of dialogue. For tricky sounds (like خ, غ, ق, ر), your tutor demonstrates the mouth position, has you repeat, and fine-tunes through comparison. You also get voice-message homework so your tutor can give feedback on pronunciation between lessons.

1-to-1 speaking lessons start from £10 per session. Your first lesson with any tutor is a free trial. You can also take sibling or group speaking classes at lower per-person rates. Lessons are 30, 45, or 60 minutes — you choose what fits your schedule and attention span.
