Chess in Persian culture: Chess was invented in Persia — the word “checkmate” comes from the Persian شاهمات (shāh-māt — the king is dead/stunned). Zurkhaneh — the House of Strength: The زورخانه (zurkhāne — literally “strength house”) is a uniquely Persian institution — a combination of athletic training, music, and spiritual ritual that predates Islam by centuries. Athletes (pahlavān — پهلوان, meaning hero or champion) perform circular movements with wooden clubs (میل — mil) and iron shields (سنگ — sang) to the beat of a drummer and the chanting of poetry. Zurkhaneh is a UNESCO-recognised intangible cultural heritage. The word پهلوان (pahlavān) — the title given to a zurkhaneh master — is both “athlete” and “hero” in Persian.

Iran’s national sport is کشتی (koshti — wrestling). Iran has won more Olympic medals in wrestling than almost any other country. The tradition of wrestling in Iran goes back thousands of years and is tied to the heroic mythology of the Shahnameh. The legendary hero Rustam is depicted as an undefeated wrestler. Football (فوتبال) is the most popular sport by spectator numbers, but wrestling is the most culturally significant.
Checkmate comes from the Persian شاهمات (shāh-māt) — “the king is helpless/dead.” Chess itself was invented in India, but it was Persia that spread it to Europe and coined the terminology that passed into Arabic, then into European languages. The chess piece called the “rook” comes from the Persian رخ (rokh — chariot). Persian cultural contribution to chess is one of the most underappreciated facts in sports history.
