University Vocabulary in Farsi: 80+ Academic Words and Phrases

Whether you are a student preparing to study in Iran, a Farsi learner who wants to discuss academic topics, a heritage learner returning to the language, or a diaspora student navigating Persian-medium education, this guide covers the complete vocabulary of university life in Farsi.

Iranian academia has its own terminology, structures, and cultural norms that differ meaningfully from Western university life. Understanding the vocabulary also means understanding the context — this guide covers both.

The Word for University in Farsi دانشگاه Dāneshgāh University — literally “knowledge place”

The beauty of دانشگاه: The word is a compound of dānesh (دانش — knowledge, wisdom) and gāh (گاه — place, time). Literally “a place of knowledge.” Persian frequently forms meaningful compound words this way — you will see gāh in کتابخانه (library — book-house), آزمایشگاه (laboratory — testing-place), and خوابگاه (dormitory — sleep-place).

Degree Levels in Iran — مدارک تحصیلی

The Iranian academic system uses a specific structure for degrees. Understanding these levels is important whether you are discussing your own education or navigating Persian academic contexts:

کاردانی Kārdāni Associate Degree (2 years) Two-year technical/vocational qualification. Literally “craft-knowledge.”
کارشناسی Kārshenāsi Bachelor’s Degree (4 years) The standard undergraduate degree in Iran. Literally “work-knowing.” The most common degree level.
کارشناسی ارشد Kārshenāsi-ye Arshad Master’s Degree (2 years) Arshad means “senior/elder” — “senior bachelor’s.” Requires a thesis (پایان‌نامه).

پردیسPardisCampusAn ancient Persian word — also the origin of the English word “paradise” (via Greek paradeisos)

A beautiful etymology: The word pардис (pardis — campus/garden) is the source of the English word “paradise.” Ancient Persian pairi-daēza meant “walled garden” — it entered Greek as paradeisos, then Latin, then English as paradise. When you call a university campus “pardis,” you are using one of the oldest and most travelled words in the world.

How the Iranian University System Differs from Western Universities

Understanding the vocabulary is enriched by understanding the context. The Iranian university system has several distinctive features that affect how academic vocabulary is used:

  • The Konkur (کنکور). The national university entrance examination is the defining gateway to Iranian higher education. It is taken after high school completion and determines which universities and which fields a student can enter. The Konkur is one of the most competitive examinations in the world — preparation for it is a significant part of final high school years.
  • Gender-segregated campuses. Many Iranian universities have separate facilities, dormitories, and sometimes separate campuses for male and female students. This affects the vocabulary used for campus navigation.
  • Grading out of 20. Iranian universities grade on a scale of 0–20, not 0–100 or A–F. A score of 10 (dah) is the minimum passing grade. Scores of 17–20 are considered excellent. When discussing grades in Persian, this context is assumed.
  • The semester system (نیمسال). The academic year runs September (Mehr) through June in two semesters, following the Iranian Solar Hijri calendar.
  • Persian as the language of instruction. All undergraduate instruction in Iranian universities is conducted in Persian (with some exceptions in bilingual programmes). This means that technical and academic vocabulary in fields like engineering, medicine, and law is primarily in Persian rather than English.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you say “university” in Farsi?

University in Farsi is دانشگاه (dāneshgāh) — a compound of دانش (knowledge) and گاه (place). Literally “a place of knowledge.” The word for a faculty or college within a university is دانشکده (dāneshkade). For university student, the word is دانشجو (dāneshju — knowledge-seeker).

What is the difference between دانش‌آموز and دانشجو?

دانش‌آموز (dānesh-āmuz) is a school student — primary or secondary level. دانشجو (dāneshju) is a university student specifically. The distinction is important in Persian because the two words are not interchangeable — calling a university student a دانش‌آموز would be incorrect and would likely be noticed.

How do you address a professor in Persian?

The standard form of address is استاد (ostād) followed by their surname — for example, Ostād Ahmadi. For professors with a doctorate, دکتر (Doktor) followed by surname is also common. Ostād is a term of deep respect — it also carries the meaning of master craftsperson or expert, so using it for a professor reflects genuine deference.

What does Konkur mean?

کنکور (Konkur — from French concours — competition) is Iran’s national university entrance examination. It is taken after completion of high school and determines university and field of study access. The Konkur is extraordinarily competitive — it shapes academic vocabulary because the exam preparation process (کنکور دادن — to sit the Konkur) is a defining experience for Iranian students.
