Weights & Measures — وزن و اندازه (vazn va an-daa-ze)
The words you need at the fruit and vegetable counter
| English | فارسی | Pronunciation | Quick note | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ⚖️ | Kilogram / Kilo | کیلو | ki-lo | The most-used weight word. "دو کیلو سیب" = two kilos of apples. |
| 📏 | Gram | گرم | geram | Used for smaller items — spices, nuts, sweets. "صد گرم پسته" = 100 grams of pistachio. |
| ⚖️ | Half a Kilo | نیم کیلو | nim ki-lo | نیم means half. Very common at markets — "نیم کیلو گوجه" = half a kilo of tomatoes. |
| 🥛 | Litre | لیتر | li-ter | For liquids — milk, juice, oil. "یک لیتر شیر" = one litre of milk. |
| 🥤 | Millilitre | میلیلیتر | mi-li-li-ter | For smaller liquid amounts. Often abbreviated on packaging. |
| 📦 | Piece / Item | عدد / تا | a-dad / taa | For counting individual items. "سه تا سیب" = three apples. تا is more informal than عدد. |
| 📦 | Box / Packet | جعبه / بسته | jo-be / bas-te | جعبه is a box (e.g., cereal box). بسته is a packet (e.g., pasta packet). |
| 🫙 | Jar / Tin / Can | قوطی / شیشه | gho-ti / shi-she | قوطی is a metal tin/can. شیشه is a glass jar (also means bottle). |
⚖️
Shopping tip: In Iranian bazaars and vegetable markets, vendors weigh produce in front of you using a ترازو (ta-raa-zoo) — traditional scales. Kids watch the needle swing and announce "دو کیلو شد!" (it became two kilos!). This hands-on experience makes weight vocabulary stick. When shopping with your child, ask them to read the scales: "چند کیلوئه؟" (How many kilos is it?)

Money & Prices — پول و قیمت (pool va ghey-mat)
How to talk about money and ask prices in Persian
| English | فارسی | Pronunciation | Quick note | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 💵 | Toman (informal currency) | تومان | to-maan | The currency Iranians actually use in conversation. 1 toman = 10 rials. Everyone says "تومان" not "ریال." |
| 🪙 | Rial (official currency) | ریال | ri-yaal | The official currency on banknotes — but nobody uses it in spoken conversation. Know both! |
| 💰 | Money | پول | pool | The general word for money. "پول داری؟" = Do you have money? |
| 💵 | Cash | نقد | naghd | "نقد میدی یا کارت؟" = Cash or card? Important phrase in modern Iran. |
| 💳 | Card / Credit Card | کارت | kaart | Borrowed from English. Now the primary payment method in Iranian cities. |
| 💸 | Price | قیمت | ghey-mat | "قیمتش چنده؟" = What's the price? One of the first questions kids learn. |
| 🏷️ | How much? / How much is it? | چند / چند میشه؟ | chand / chand mi-she? | THE shopping question. "این چنده؟" = How much is this? Practice it daily. |
| 💸 | Expensive | گرون | ge-roon | "خیلی گرونه!" = It's very expensive! Kids love saying this dramatically. |
| 💰 | Cheap / Inexpensive | ارزون | ar-zoon | The opposite of گرون. "این خیلی ارزونه!" = This is very cheap! |
| 🎟️ | Discount / Sale | تخفیف | takh-fif | "تخفیف داره؟" = Is there a discount? Iranians love a good تخفیف. |
| 🔄 | Change (money back) | پس دادن | pas-daa-dan | Literally "giving back." "پول پسش رو بده" = Give the change back. |
💵
Money culture note: Here's the confusing part — Iranians say تومان but the official currency is ریال. 1 toman = 10 rials. So if something costs 50,000 rials, Iranians say "پنج هزار تومان" (5,000 toman). Kids growing up in the diaspora get confused by this — teach them both! When grandma says "بیست تومان" she means 200,000 rials. It's mental math training disguised as shopping.
